The luxurious tradition of Yeye Oge

What’s the meaning of the collection name Yeye Oge?

The name "Yeye Oge" originates from the Yoruba tradition, the very roots of aso-oke itself. In Yoruba culture, "Yeye" is a term used to honour a female chief, leader, or someone who embodies authority. Meanwhile, "Oge" translates to style. Together, "Yeye Oge" represents a woman of style and authority, capturing the essence of empowerment and

sophistication.

“Originating from the town of Iseyin in Oyo State, Nigeria, Aso-Oke is more than just a textile – it is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of generations past.

From the intricate designs to the mesmerizing process of creation, every thread of Aso-Oke carries with it the passion of the artisan and the pride of tradition. Passed down from father to son, this ancient art form is ingrained in the very fabric of our cultural identity.”

Where and how are your clothes made?

Our garments are proudly crafted in Lagos, Nigeria, embracing our heritage and supporting local artisans and communities. We source our fabrics locally, fostering sustainability and empowering the local economy. Collaborating with talented local artists, we infuse each piece with unique hand-painted designs, ensuring originality and authenticity. Our in-house design team meticulously curates each design, and every fabric undergoes a thorough vetting process before being cut and sewn to perfection. For our hand-painted pieces, the artwork is skillfully applied post-sewing and treated to maintain vibrancy without compromising on quality.

Q: What does sustainability mean to you culturally and within your clothes-making practices?

Sustainability isn't just a trend for us – it's deeply ingrained in our cultural heritage and clothing-making practices. The traditional process of crafting aso-oke has always been environmentally friendly, with minimal waste. Building on this legacy, we embrace upcycled fashion, repurposing textiles and materials to create new, innovative designs. You'll often find patched-style patterns in our pieces, where cut-off materials are transformed into fresh designs. Additionally, our fabrics are predominantly plant-based, crafted from organic cotton, further aligning with our commitment to eco-conscious practices.

What’s your vision for the brand in the next 5 years?

Our goal is to modernize Africa for both Africa and the world, increasing GDP by producing and employing locally, while also expanding to incorporate native African fabrics beyond Nigeria.
